Maps + Music, Manhattan & Money!

First, the music! Listen to this song by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs while reading about maps.
Next, I’ve been wanting to share this awesome mapping Manhattan project! In the age of GPS and Google Maps, Artist  Nobutaka Aozaki is asking strangers for directions, and compiling their handwritten directions into a giant map of Manhattan in a project he calls, “Here to There.” Below are some pics of the piece, and you can read more about it on this blog, and his website.

And finally, the money.
While reading about OpenStreetMaps for class this week, I just noticed a post via The Knight Foundation’s Facebook page about a mapping start-up called MapBox. Their mapping data is collected from open sources like OpenStreetMap.org, and they’ve just earned $10 million in grant money to expand their 35-person company to further their mission of easily adding “fast beautiful maps to your sites and apps.” Read more about it/them in this Fast Company blog (including their little promo video), this WSJ blog, and on their website (where you can also play around with the maps! Fun!)
UPDATE: I just played around with MapBox to make this map for a project that Josie and I are working on.

  1. Thanks for sharing this, Ateqah! I can certainly appreciate a post with a recommended soundtrack 🙂
Maybe you’ll find a way to make use of MapBox in your Sandy project?
