"Aerial Arts" Exhibition @ Studio-X, Oct. 11 – 25
Aerial Arts: Defense Discourses, Cartographic Critiques opens Friday, October 11th at Studio-X NYC.

As landscape architects, we have largely inherited the regionalist and realist use of aerial cartography, whether as McHarg-ian underlays or GIS and Google Earth rasters. Instead of dismissing those maps, this show excavates the original, cultural context of post-war aerial imagery, its forgotten geographies and distant debates.
With original infographics and ‘aerial’ samples from Robert Smithson, Walter de Maria, Buckminster Fuller, Stewart Brand, George T. Renner, Richard E. Harrison and many, many more, the exhibit charts the polar projections, oblique ‘over-views,’ and immersive maps shared between Air-Age (civil) defense discourses and post-minimal land-artists. By drawing out the cartographic response to space (and arms) race rhetoric, the show traverses a moment of global, intimate, and militarized mapping that resonates with our own.
In addition to the exhibit, Studio-X NYC is hosting an array of events in October examining the ‘aerial’ and its intersections in art, architecture, and urbanism. Please join us for discussions with William Fox, Sonja Duemplemann, Enrique Ramirez, Laura Kurgan, Bradley Samuels, and Annette Fierro.
