What makes a city “legible”?

In our observations of Smart Cities, we must also consider the domain of design located between urban and information design. Wayfinding systems extend beyond signs and maps. Intelligent Architectural Systems that direct (and safeguard) our movement throughout urban spaces are essential. This article from SEGD introduces Tim Fendley and his work on Legible London in anticipation of a 2015 Wayfinding Workshop that took place in San Francisco.

  1. Thanks! Yes, analog wayfinding, street mark-up, etc, are all precursors to the screen-based urban interfaces we’re fixated on today.
