Outstanding syllabus... I wish I could take your class but will definitely use it to augment my own reading list this semester. Nice work!

I'm sorry, Derek! That strikethrough wasn't my doing! I use a plugin that identifies all broken links in my posts, and marks them with a strikethrough. My textual formatting was no way a tacit commentary on your comedic abilities! You'll see that I've updated the link and gave you some extra props.

As for misophonia: I agree with you! I think it sounds a little weird, too -- but weird things often prove true.

You know what drives me up the wall? When someone takes the milk out of the refrigerator, uses it, and doesn't IMMEDIATELY put it back. I remember, when I was a kid, having a friend stay the night who would do just that; pour milk into his his cereal and sit down to eat. I would stare intently and angrily at this kid (my friend, perhaps my best) with utter hatred, waiting for them to realize that the milk jug was still sitting on the table. Inside, I'd be boiling, screaming in my head, "The MILK! You forgot to put the milk away! Hello?!?" Until I could no longer take it and I'd have to get up and do it myself, letting out a passive aggressive sigh which, of course, the other child would not or could not perceive. Sometimes, that would be the last time that kid ever stayed the night.

Now, did I or do I have a condition called Room Temperature Lactose Intolerance? Or just an anger problem?

When I was a child, I was diagnosed with and took medicine for ADHD. Did I really have a disorder or was school just boring?

I loved your article. I'm a little hurt that you referred to me as "some comedian" (with a strike through the word comedian) but just know that I wasn't saying misophonia doesn't exist. I'm just saying that it sounds weird (no pun intended). In fact, I think my wife suffers from a version of it that includes smells.

Good luck to you and consider going to a new gym or buying better headphones.

Yours Truly,
Some Comedian

Hi, Kimon. Through our "exhibition critiques" we look at existing exhibitions that make use of a pretty wide variety of platforms -- from flashy custom-designed jobs to wikis to Omeka. We'll keep a running list of available platforms and hold a few "design development" workshops and tech labs throughout the semester to help students choose the best tools for the job and implement their projects. In my Fall 2010 class, most students used Wordpress and Tumblr, a couple built wikis, one might've used Indexhibit, a couple *considered* using Omeka but then opted for simpler platforms, and several integrated <a href="http://www.vuvox.com" rel="nofollow">Vuvox</a> into their projects, which proved problematic when Vuvox was down for the five days preceding our final presentations.

I'd say that these projects <i>fully</i> conceived as exhibitions -- primarily because we're regarding the exhibition as a "method" or mode of presentation for exploring our course content. At the same time, though, our course content bears directly on our conception of what an "online exhibition" can be. So the project's form and content -- and, come to think of it, the class's form and content -- are very much integrated. It might be nice to partner with students in a program that <i>does</i> specialize in the conceptualization and implementation of exhibitions :-)

Sounds great Shannon, and there is a lot in there that is relevant to our work at the BGC, so I can't wait to hear about what new things you come up with so that I can steal them. I'm also excited to see your final reading list looks like, a lot of really great stuff in there. Wondering if you ever use Baudrillard's Ecstasy of Communication. Love watching my students pull it apart trying to get at what he is saying, especially since he can be polarizing.

What platforms do your students use for their exhibitions and what shape they take as final projects (for instance how fully conceived are they as exhibitions and what kinds of logistical and conceptual limitations do they work within)? We have done a range of online exhibitions with different platforms from Google Sketchup designs using our actual exhibition space to Omeka exhibitions to a complete now public site built from scratch using HTML (http://resources-bgc.bard.edu/19thcNYC/). Its also been interesting to watch our faculty and students using wikis and Prezi as tools for the exhibition development process, both of which have allowed us to work with the juxtaposition of visual material and conceive of prototypes at different stages.

Awesome. I think we've effectively written a handy "code of conduct" guidebook that could be distributed at gyms across the land.
