Curriculum Specialist Wanted
HabitatMap is seeking a Curriculum Specialist to assist with curriculum development, toolkit development, and co-teaching for a Maps-Based Research Methods course that will be taught at the Green School in East Williamsburg this spring. The Curriculum Specialist will work in close partnership with the classroom teacher at the Green School and the Executive Director of HabitatMap. Prior experience in curriculum development and instructional design is required.
Course Description:
The ten week course will instruct students on maps-based research methods focusing on three facilities adjacent to Newtown Creek: the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, the National Grid Greenpoint Energy Facility, and Waste Management’s Varick Avenue Transfer Station. The selected facilities will be the starting point from which the students will examine water, energy, and waste systems by geographically tracing the material flows and institutional networks that connect these facilities to the larger world. The students’ findings will be documented using HabitatMap’s community mapping platform and integrated into a Maps-Based Research Methods toolkit. The toolkit will be used by high schools, both in New York and nationally, to conduct investigations of water, energy, and waste systems in their own communities using examples from Newtown Creek.
Curriculum development and toolkit development will take place after school hours and on some weekends. Exact dates and times will be worked out in cooperation with the Curriculum Specialist. The 44 class sessions are approximately one hour in duration and will be taught during the school day, Monday through Friday. The exact time during the school day is to be decided. There are also three half-day field trips and four course evaluations. To be considered for the job the Curriculum Specialist need not commit to co-teaching the course and participating in the evaluations, but preference will be given to candidates who can commit at least some time to these activities.
Compensation:
The Curriculum Specialist will be paid $50/hour. Total compensation depends on the number of hours worked, with maximum compensation set at $5,000 for 100 hours of work.
